How did you end up at BEP Europe?
Via LinkedIn, I received an invitation from a recruitment agency for an interview with a company looking for a software engineer in the automotive industry. The interviews in Bruges went very well, first with HR and later with the managers. I was actually not actively looking for a new job, but the pleasant interviews, seeing the machines and the possibility of actually being able to develop them, made me excited about a job at BEP Europe.
What studies did you take?
I have a degree in engineering technology with IT as specialisation. I have studied three years at KU Leuven at the technology campus in Ostend, Belgium, after which I have completed my master’s at the KU Leuven campus in Bruges. In high school, I have taken sciences and eight hours of mathematics.
What do you like the most about your job?
The variety and freedom we have at BEP Europe. I am not someone who wants to sit at a desk all the time, but someone who wants to ‘get his hands dirty’ once in a while. Starting up machines, testing new software on existing machines and on-site interventions make for a very varied range of tasks. It is also very satisfying when a machine can actually produce things, partly as a result of software you have written yourself.
By freedom I mostly mean that there is not one fixed way to handle things. There is a lot of room for personal input. You can always program the way you want (in accordance with some conventions of course), as long as the final product comes out OK. Everyone in the software department is ready to help if needed, but there is never a strict plan you have to follow.
Last but not least, the collegiality in BEP is a big plus as well. It is nice to work with kind people, both within the software department and outside of it. Especially during on-site interventions, the team spirit is very strong. You all collaborate on a project and in the evening you get to know one another a little better over a snack and a drink.
